I went back to work on the car this morning. The flex plate bolts came out pretty easily, but the bell housing bolts are proving to be a bit more challenging. The lower bolts on either side, which in plain sight, came out easily. The next highest bolt on the passenger side, which was also easy to see and get to, also came out with a couple of long extensions and a universal.
The next highest drivers side bolt, which is also in plain sight is still in place. I was able to break the bolt free with a box wrench, but there is no room between the tunnel and the bell housing to get a socket straight on the bolt. I tried multiple universals, extension sizes, etc. and couldn't find a way to get in there. I was able to get a wrench on the bolt and turn it just enough to break it free, but there wasn't enough room once the bolt moved to make any additional turns. I decided to leave it and see how bad the top bolts were going to be.
I took off the distributor cap and removed the wiper motor, removed some more vacuum hoses that were still in the way and disconnected the wiring harness from teh connectors on the front drivers side firewall in an effort to get the wiring harness that runs behind the distributor out of the way. I was able to see the top, passenger side bell house bolt but not the drivers side -- the wiring harness is still in the way and to get it out of the way I think I need to remove the wiring block bolted to the firewall.
While doing that, I also realized I forgot to disconnect the trans kick down cable, so that will come out next time.
That's where it sits right now. I'm three bell housing bolts, a kick down cable and two motor mount bolts away from freeing the motor.
