Nose Job

With summer coming to and end, I haven't had time to work on the car the past several weeks.  It's been cold, college football season is underway, etc. etc. etc.

This morning, I bought a portable heater for the garage and decided to get back to work.

I disconnected the wiring harness connector on the firewall and started to pull the harness from the engine compartment.  However, to get the headlight harness out, I had to take the nose off the car.  All in all, not a bad job.

First I removed the lower spoiler, which was interesting because some of the reinforcing/mounting plates were missing, but the bolts were all there.  The spoiler is original (GM date codes confirm that) and it didn't look like the spoiler had been off before, so I figure the factory must have been short on plates and just put them where ever they wanted.  Odd.

Once the nose was off, the front lighting harness and the clips holding it in place were easy to get at.

I removed the two grill inserts and the left side one fell apart.  The part had clearly been damage and glued, so I'll need to order a new one of those.  It looks like OER makes reproductions and I can get them through Classic Industries for a mere $70 - each.

I also pulled both outer fender skirts.  I know the car had a previous tire blowout on the driver side and sure enough, all of the push clips holding that skirt to the fender were missing and a few of the screws were missing too.  No big deal.

The cruise control transducer and vacuum can also came out today, as did the rear tail lights.

The only things left in the engine compartment are the master cylinder, brake booster, proportioning valve, brake lines, AC box and lines.  I think enough stuff has been removed for me to do a decent cleaning it.  I'm going to try and degrease what I can and see how good it looks.  If it cleans up ok, I'll prep it, tape off everything and paint under the hood.  I keep thinking I need to remove and clean up the k-member and such but this isn't a 100-point restoration.  I'll certainly clean up and paint the member, but I'm not going to pull it off.  I don't think I will anyway.

This week I want to get my motor, heads and trans up to the engine shop that is going to clean them and do any machine work.  I talked to the guy a few weeks ago and he said it won't take him very long to do the work.  I'd like to get all of that stuff back before the snow flies here.
