End of the Title Saga

After a full month, my new title, in my name, finally arrived.  The car is now "officially" mine.  But here's the back story and some advice.

Shortly after I got the documentation back from the FL DMV, I got word that the corrected title had been sent to the original owner.  They had to do that since the FL title was officially still in the original owners name.  Not a big problem.  The original owners have been great to work with and I feel very fortunate for that.

Anyway, they got a hold of me near the end of January and let me know they had received the corrected title, signed it over and had sent it back out to me.

The corrected FL title arrived here on January 23.  Two days later, I headed out to the CO DMV to get everything taken care of.  After the usual wait at the DMV, all was good.  I walked out with license plates, registration and figured my title would be in the mail in a few weeks.

Sure enough, two weeks later I get home and there in the mail is an envelope from the CO DMV.  I tear open the envelope and, sure enough, there's a title in there -- but it's the FLORIDA title with a letter from the CO DMV.  Apparently, when I did my paperwork at the DMV, they forgot to have me sign the FL title as the new owner and therefore they could not complete the new title paperwork.  Ugh.  I signed the FL title and sent it back in.

Finally, today, the new CO title showed up.  Correct VIN.  Correct name. Done deal.

So -- a word of advice if you're having someone else help with your deal: make absolutely sure the seller's title has EXACTLY the right VIN listed.  I know that sounds like stupid, obvious advice, but it happened to me -- and I consider myself pretty detail oriented.  Fortunately, it was simple (and reasonably cheap) to get it fixed.  FL was great to work with, other states may not be so easy.

Now if we can get some consistently warm weather, it'll be time to start getting into the engine ...
